EVANSVILLE HOME TALENT TEAM STILL UNDEFEATED AT 3-0

On Sunday, May 21st the Evansville Jays made the short trip down Hwy 213 to play hosts the Orfordville Orioles. Last year the Jays split the season series with Orfordville, one win and one loss. Last year Orfordville was the top seed in the West Division of the Southeast Section with a record of 12 wins and 3 loses.

Evansville started the scoring early. With only two batters into the game, the Jays already had one run on the board. The game started off when Brent Cashore (who just finished his first year at UW-Platteville while playing baseball there) lead off with a triple, and then Jon Frey hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Cashore. Score now Evansville 1, Orfordville 0.

The Jays big offensive inning came in the third. With one out, Frey reached on an infield base hit and later advanced to second on a stolen base. Next batter Casey Nelson hit a double to score Frey. Next batter Jerod Steindl hit a base hit to score Nelson. Jasen Koebler walked. Tim Legler hit a base hit to score Steindl from second base. Jason Schulz hit in Koebler on an error by the shortstop. Score now Evansville 5, Orfordville 0.

Evansville added another run in the top of the fifth inning when Koebler hit a base hit to center and advanced the second when the fielder misplayed the ball. He later moved to third on a pass ball. A couple of batters later, Jeremy Rasmussen hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Koebler. Score now Evansville 6, Orfordville 0.

In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Orfordville scored 3 runs on 5 hits and 1 error. They also added a run in the seventh. Score now Evansville 6, Orfordville 4.

Evansville was able to add an extra insurance run in the eighth inning when Cashore lead off with a double and Frey bunted him to third. Next batter Casey Nelson hit a double to score Cashore. Final score Evansville 7, Orfordville 4.

Solid pitching and defense held Orfordville to only 4 runs because they had runners on in every inning. Orfordville stranded 14 runners on base in the game.

Evansville's outstanding hitters for the game were Casey Nelson who went 4 for 5 with two doubles and Tim Legler who went 3 for 4. Both hitters had 2 RBIs each. Brent Cashore hit 2 for 4 with a double and a triple.

For Evansville's second season in the Home Talent Baseball League they have already matched their Sunday League win total from last season. Evansville's final record in last year's inaugural season was 3 wins and 13 losses.
