EVANSVILLE JAYS' RALLY FALLS SHORT AGAINST 2005 SECTION CHAMPS

On Sunday, June 25th the Evansville Jays traveled to Jefferson for a Southeast Section Home Talent baseball game. With storm cloud rolling all around Jefferson, only a light rain shower was received at the ball park. Not enough to stop play and delay the game. Many other games around the league were rained out on Sunday.

Jefferson also played the day before on Saturday and won 3-2 over Stoughton, so the Jays were hoping they would have the advantage and could get a win against the 2005 Southeast Section Champions.

In the top of the fourth inning Evansville had the bases loaded, but was not able to score. In the bottom half of that inning, defensively Evansville was able to work out of a bases loaded jam to keep the score at 0-0, but in the next inning Jefferson scored 3 runs on 2 hits and 1 error.

Evansville's only scoring of the game came in the top of the eighth inning when with one out Jason Schultz and Jon Frey hit back-to-back singles. Next batter Brent Cashore advanced the runners to third and second on a ground ball to the first baseman. Now with two outs Jerod Steindl hit a clutch 2 RBI single to score Schultz and Frey. Next batter Brooks Baumberger was hit by a pitch. Then Josh Copeland crushed the ball to left field, but the fielder made a diving catch to save a run or two and end the inning.

During Evansville's last chance in the top of the ninth inning, Ryan Lindemann reached on a base hit, but the Jays were unable to score him for the tie. Final score Evansville 2 Jefferson 3. Evansville's Sunday League record is now 3 wins and 5 losses.

The Jays won their Night League game last Thursday, 4-2 at New Glarus. Evansville is now 3-1 in Night League play, and will host Hollandale this Thursday, June 29th, starting at 7:30 pm at Lake Leota.

This Sunday, July 2nd Evansville will host Utica for a 1:00 pm game at the high school field. For the latest schedule and results please visit the team's website at www.evansville.hometalent.org.
