EVANSVILLE JAYS BATS COOL OFF

On Sunday, July 2nd the Evansville Jays (3-5) hosted Utica (4-2) in a Southeast Section Home Talent baseball game. The first meeting between the two teams back in June at Utica, Utica scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Again, the Jays lose another one run game to Utica, 7-6.

The Jays' bats started the game like fireworks on the Fourth of July, scoring six runs on six hits and two errors in the bottom half of the first inning. Nick Manion lead off with a walk and scored on Casey Nelson's home run (a first on Sunday League play for the Jays in the modern era). Jerod Steindl and Brent Cashore hit back-to-back base hits. Brookes Baumberger drove them in with a double. Next batter, Jason Schultz reached on an error. Evan Baumberger hit a single to score cousin Brookes. Evan reached second base on an error. Next batter Jeremy Rasumussen scored Baumberger with a base hit. Score Evansville 6 Utica 0.

With an early 6-0 lead the Jays were in control for the win, but Utica battled back to tie the game in the fourth inning on a 2 RBI triple. In the top of the sixth inning Utica's Micky Ramsden lead off with a solo homerun which was the difference in the game. After the first inning Evansville's bats cooled off, only getting three more hits in the game.

Evansville's Sunday league record is now 3 wins and 6 losses. For the six losses, the Jays have lost four games by one run each. With a positive look at the season thus far, Evansville is right there, competing strong and playing exciting games. The Jays have improved immensely over the inaugural 2005 season.

The Jays won their Night League game last Thursday, 8-2 against Hollandale at Lake Leota. Evansville is now 4-1 in Night League play and in first place of the East Division South Section. The Jays will travel to Platteville this Thursday, July 6th.

Evansville played at Lake Leota against Oregon after the parade on July 4th. The game story will be in next week's paper.
