EVANSVILLE JAYS ALLOW 4 RUNS
IN BOTTOM OF 9TH
On Sunday, July 9th the Evansville Jays (3-7) traveled to Albion
(9-1) in a Southeast Section Home Talent baseball game. The first
meeting between the two teams back in May, Albion scored the winning
run in the top of the ninth inning. Again, the Jays lose another
one run heartbreaker to Albion, 8-7.
Trailing by a run in the second inning, the Jays scored a run to
tie the game when Jerod Steindl led off with a base hit. Jon Frey
bunted him to second, and Jeremy Rasmussen singled in Steindl. Score
Evansville 1 Albion 1.
The Jays took the lead in the 4th inning. With one out Frey hit
a base hit. During Frey's attempt to steal second base the fielder
missed the throw from the catcher and the ball sailed into center.
Frey was able to advance to third. Next batter, Jason Schultz walked
and stole second base. With runners at second and third, Rasmussen
singled in the runners. Josh Copeland laid down a sacrifice bunt
to move Rasmussen to second base. Next batter Nic Larson scored
Rasmussen on a single. Albion did score 2 runs in the bottom half
of the inning. Score Evansville 4 Albion 3.
Evansville added to the lead in the 5th inning. With one out, Steindl
and Frey were both hit by pitches. Schultz hit an RBI single to
score Steindl. With runners at second and third Jeremy Rasmussen
hit his second 2 RBI single of the game. Albion was able to score
a run in the bottom of the inning. Score Evansville 7 Albion 4.
In the bottom of the ninth inning with one out, Albion was able
to score 4 runs on a combination of 1 hit batter, 1 fielder's choice
out, 2 hits, 3 walks and 1 error. The game was a devastating loss
for the Jays. The win was in reach over the division leading Tigers.
However, the Jays highlight player was Jeremy Rasmussen, who finished
the game going 3 for 5 with 5 RBIs. He also took the mound in the
fifth inning with the base loaded and one out. He only allowed one
run that inning, and pitched two scoreless innings after that.
The Jays lost their Night League game last Thursday, 5-4 in extra
innings at Platteville. Evansville is now 4-2 in Night League play.
The Jays will host Pine Bluff this Thursday, July 13th at Lake Leota
Park starting at 7:30 pm. Pine Bluff is near the top of the night
league standings, so this game will be a key match up in determining
night league playoff seeds.
This Sunday, July 16th Evansville will host Lake Mills for a 1:00
pm game at the high school field. For the latest schedule and results

FOLLOWING TEXT FROM ALBION'S
WEBSITE ON 7/11/06:
TIGERS COME FROM BEHIND TO SHOCK EVANSVILLE
The Albion Tigers have made a bad habit of finding themselves desperate
in the late innings of ballgames. Fortunately, they also have shown
a knack for coming alive in the late innings. The Evansville Jays
were the latest victims on Sunday, as Albion erased a three-run
deficit in the bottom of the ninth to win their eighth straight
when Andy Zacharias drew a bases loaded walk to drive in Jason Millar
with the winning run.
The Albion offense banged out 13 hits, led by Ethan Vaade and Ryan
Olstad each with three hits. Vaade also added three RBIs, including
one in the ninth. Jesse Appel added two doubles, and Jason Millar
had a run-scoring triple in the first inning.
Kris Agnew threw four stellar innings in relief to earn the win,
allowing no runs and striking out eight.
